With this latter end in view, many notes and observations have been included to show the nature and development of the various forms and constructions, and to point out differences between the usage of today and that which the student observes in Shakespeare and other English classics. This edition has been revised to include exercises at the end of each lesson, new examples, and new exercises. To revise the textbook to be current with 21st century Standard American English while still retaining the charm and efficacy of the 19th century original book is the aim of this editor.
