HE LOVES ME, HE LOVES ME NOT. Sylvie is sure Carl loves her, so why hasn't he kissed her? Sylvie and Carl have always been best friends, and Sylvie's always dreamed that they'd get married someday. But when she begins to realize that Carl may be more interested in boys than girls, Sylvie struggles to hold on to the pieces of her shattered dreams. With her trademark blend of honesty, sensitivity, and humor, bestselling author Jacqueline Wilson delivers a novel for teens about first love, first heartbreak, and the power of a kiss.
Tiny Sylvie (disparagingly called "Titch") has been best friends with Carl seemingly forever. Wilson wonderfully creates the intensity of their friendship (including the divine Glassworld), and I felt Sylvie's heartache when she realizes that things are changing with Carl, and he is struggling with issues of his own. Boy-crazy Miranda makes an interesting addition to the story: just when you want to shake her, she'll show a more sensitive or mature side. Over all a great story with a sensitive topic handled well. The story is set in England, so be prepared for occasional English terms and phrasing. For readers who have enjoyed some of Wilson's other books (such as CANDYFLOSS or BEST FRIENDS, this is a good next step -- more on the level of GIRLS UNDER PRESSURE or GIRLS OUT LATE.)
