Dreams for Kids: An Advocate for Hope

I often found myself reading through tears as I turned the pages of "Kiss of a Dolphin" as Tom Tuohy recounts the heartwarming stories of J. J. O'Conner, Jesse White, Father Walter Brennan, and Clara Kirk. "Kiss of a Dolphin" is the story of Dreams for Kids. It is the story of how ordinary people are making an extraordinary difference in fulfilling the dreams of others. The story moves from the Cabrini-Green area of Chicago, to Chicago's Westside, and to West Englewood, mushrooming into statewide and then national recognition. Partners in the adventures recounted here include, Jesse White and his internationally acclaimed tumbling team, Father Wally Brennan's ministry in the streets, and Clara Kirk's shelter of hope. Their organizations and individual team members have inspired hope to those entrapped by the cycle of poverty and race restrictions and limitations. Jim Smith and Dick Marak provided the inspiration and encouragement for J.J. O'Conner to rise above the despair of being a quadriplegic. A lesson learned while swimming with the dolphins at an aquatic facility in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, taught J.J. an important lesson in trust, acceptance, and communication. The kiss of the dolphin changed J.J.'s approach to life and self acceptance. Powerful read

Kiss of a Dolphin is the only new book I've read in the last 6 months due to my college schedule. I don't regret it! It was enthralling to read about everyday miracles and people who are willing to drop everything to help others. Sometimes I have songs that I associate with books. The song I think of for this book is Tracy Lawrence's "You Find Out Who Your Friends Are". Really, this book illustrates beautifully the majesty of human potential to achieve once barriers are removed. This is the story of impoverished and homeless children discovering Christmas. This is the story of paralyzed children water skiing and playing sports like other children. This is the story of J.J., a wonderfully handsome and charming young man who happens to be a quadrapalegic and made it through college because an awesome guy named Jim- I think he's in his 40's or later- moved into J.J's dorm and took him wherever he needed to be. This is a powerful book that challenges people to do the right thing all the time, and to put in extra effort to help others. I couldn't stop talking about this book and thinking about how I would like to help. Buy the book! You will not be disappointed.

A Must Read for All Ages

It is difficult for an author to write a story that captures not only your mind, but your soul. Tom Tuohy's, "Kiss of a Dolphin" does exactly that. This true story of how one man started Dreams for Kids, an organization to benefit less fortunate children and those with disabilities, will inspire you into action. Before you finish the book, you will be wondering how you can meet the incredible individuals that Tom writes about and whose stories will captivate your heart. This book takes you on a journey where you need to know what happens next. I loved this book! I keep it handy to refer to the wonderful inspirational quotes scattered throughout the book. Buy several and give them to your friends as gifts. People of all ages will not only enjoy this book, but should read this book.

Tom's book is AWESOME! He's shares stories from the heart and gives hope to every day people about making a difference in the world. Tom Tuohy is one of those people who know that one person can make a big difference. His work in the Chicago area has made a huge difference to thousands of kids - kids who might not get Christmas gifts, kids who would think that being in a wheel chair prevents them from enjoying outdoor activities, kids that think sports aren't attainable until Tom stepped in. When you purchase Tom's book, you're not only get great inspirational stories but you are also helping to make a difference as Tom selflessly gives every penny from the sale of his book to his Dreams for Kids organization.

This book should come with a warning label: CAUTION: READING THIS BOOK WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE FOREVER

Kiss of a Dolphin is a powerful, moving story about the origins of Dreams for Kids, a grassroots charity organization in Chicago that changes children's lives for the better. The book reminds me of "Tuesdays with Morey" or "The Why Cafe." The title refers to a story about a young man named JJ O'Connor . . . imagine mixing "Miracle on Ice" with "Million Dollar Baby" . . . only with an inspirational ending. I highly recommend this book . . . but watch out: you won't get past page 50 without getting on your knees and asking God to forgive you for how little you've done to help your fellow man, and inspire you to act with the humanity, kindness and just plain fun that characterizes Tom Touhy and his organizaton, Dreams for Kids.
