Olive Reader has just moved to Queens, New York, into a senior living facility to be near her twin sister Jean and Jean's sister-in-law Maggie. The three women decide to do volunteer work at a nearby nursing home and are assigned to visit two ladies and a gentleman--Irma, Elizabeth, and Howard. No sooner has Olive begun her visits when each of her three charges reveal that they have been contacted by a lawyer named Edgar Barnes who has found a "long, lost relative" of theirs who wishes to meet them. Olive smells a rat and quickly engages Jean and Maggie in her investigation. When the lawyer takes one of the women patients out of town to meet her supposed relative, Olive is worried, but when the woman returns home and suddenly dies, Olive becomes petrified and she and her pals ramp up their efforts. In their attempt to prevent what they believe to be murder, the three women devise plans to ferret out the lawyer's motives and prevent him from hurting the other two patients.
