Book Overview

"...we are all Death's pupils, we practitioners-students of the great healer."

When magic broke free in my blood, I chose to follow our ancient family path and become a practitioner. I'm learning to heal, and to protect innocents. I dip into minds, stalk vampires, and set wards by the light of the moon. I can hear the children of the night calling.

But there are other families...and other paths. Families with twisted ambitions and frightening powers. On the frontier, folk whisper that one clan is the most dangerous of all.

Chief among those dark sorcerers is a man known as the Keeper of Souls.

And now he wants to keep mine.

"...once in a very great while I find something I wish I'd read thirty years before it was ever published. ... These books do not let you rest." -Sleeping Hedgehog

"charming...unusual...delightful...definitely worth checking out" -Locus Magazine

"It is good to see this back--the Alfreda stories are one of the reasons YA is so dynamic today. ...Little House on the Prairie meets Harry Potter, with a dash of Stephen King." -Sherwood Smith, author of Crown Duel

"This is one of the best historical dark fantasies I've ever read. ...If you've not read any of Katharine Eliska Kimbriel's books yet, what's stopping you?" -Shiny Book Review

"...Kimbriel made me almost miss my bus stop at work because I had to read just one more page." -The Book Pushers

"It's hard to express how much I enjoyed this book. This is all very, very well done. The characters are believable, the setting feels real, and the magic is convincing, with real limitations, rules, and costs. Highly recommended." -Lis Carey's Library

Would you please get moving!!!!!

Starting with Fire Sanctuary, through Fires of Nuala and Hidden Fires, all of which I love and still have, onto this series, which leaves poor Ally with quite a way to go, I have followed KEK. She moves ve---rrrr------rrrrr----y slowly. Her stuff is so good, but it is hard to get new stuff when none is being written. I noticed that she has a new chapbook out, but that will just whet our appetites for more. Is it publishing problems? I am getting tired of publishers not advertizing their authors, then dropping them for low sales, especially when it is my favorite authors. Obviously, KEK is one of them and I hope she comes out with sequels to this series and even Nuala. We are hungry for more!

Worth the hunt

This is a great follow-up to the first novel (Night Calls). The pace set in the first book doesn't slacken, the characters feel right, the story is gripping, and the writing is so smooth as to be nearly invisible, like you're floating along in the story rather than translating words on a page into mental images. I picked it up one evening before dinnertime, and neglected to eat dinner and stayed up past my bedtime in order to finish it. I can't wait for the next book.

Wonderful

This book is wonderfully written. The themes are perfectly balanced, it has wonderful flow, and the story is interesting until the very last page. This author is one of the most talented I've come across in modern fiction, and I can't wait for her next book. KINDRED RITES is worth every penny, even with the extra fees to get it on special order. I'd recommend this book to anyone who is interest in the supernatural.

One of the best books about magic I've ever read.

I loved this book. I enjoyed it so much, I bought a copy for both sisters and my mom. We also loved "Night Calls". We're all eagerly awaiting more in this series.

Allie's back, Hooray! -- Sometimes Death is a better choice.

I love these books! Although Kindred Rites and Night Calls can be read as stand-alones, they are even more powerful when you read all of the story. Allie is tough, strong, smart, brave, and caring--- a great heroine. She is in even more danger in this book, for not just her life is in peril, her soul is too. A position as Death's apprentice is a much better choice than what awaits her otherwise. Skillful handling of myth, mountain lore and woodcraft, herbology, etc. Kimbriel has done her homework, and blends them all in with a strong plot, believable characters, and a clear clean writing style that delights. Enough terror to give you a jolt, enough strong writing to satisfy even the pickiest reader. READ THIS BOOK
