This is Nick Wilgus's third Father Ananda mystery, and I've enjoyed all three. Set in Thailand, the protagonist is a former policeman with a tragic past who has been, for ten years, a Buddhist priest. Assigned by his superiors to check out the strange sightings of ghostly heads at a tiny monastery on the coast, Father Ananda finds himself embroiled in a much deeper mystery, and--with the help of his annoying teenage ward--goes to work to solve it. This mystery is, like the other two in this series, gentle but gripping, filled with interesting insights about Thai Buddhism and life in the cities and countryside of this most beautiful Southeast Asian land. The characters are drawn simply but boldly. A sense of Buddhist calm permeates the narrative even when events become catastrophic, and we come to know Father Ananda not only as one who possesses uncanny wisdom but is fully human. Simple, fun, with a number of unexpected surprises, this is a most enjoyable mystery series.
