Killed on the Desk

By Adrian Holt

Two days before it runs, the biggest investigation of his career is killed from above - and the only way to find out who ordered it dead is to become the story he was never allowed to print.

Ellis Nolan has spent two years building the expos that will end careers at the top of the city: a poisoned development, a falsified safety certificate, a company that knew, and the families paying for it in a tower that looks like the future and is quietly killing them. On the night the presses are set, his editor lifts the story off the desk without meeting his eyes, on orders no one will name. Within a week his source has vanished, his notes have been subpoenaed, and the paper that raised him is erasing that he ever worked there.

Convinced that the killing of the story and the disappearance of his source are the same crime, Ellis goes underground with the one copy of the file he saved - hunted by the people who buried it, and haunted by a promise he made to a woman he may already have got killed. What he uncovers is not a villain but a machine: an advertiser too big to lose, a legal threat aimed at the load-bearing wall of any story, a proprietor's private dinners, and a call from a ministry that leaves no record - all of it converging on the simplest instruction in journalism: don't run it.

Written by former investigative reporter Adrian Holt, Killed on the Desk builds its dread not from gunfire but from documents and phone calls - from the quiet competence of power that never has to raise its voice. It is a novel about the reporting that never reaches us, the people who pay for the silence, and a flawed man who discovers he is not standing outside the machine he is exposing.
