The nicest childrens' knitwear book!

I brought this back in 1983 or 84 and it remains the best book on childrens' knits that I have ever seen. It is filled with stylish and very wearable items that are simply timeless. Among my favourites would be the bluebell dress coat and matching hat as seen on the cover, the gorgeous chenille coat and the fair isle hat and legwarmers. For many of the patterns I successfully substituted Australian 5ply for the Shetland. I really cannot recommend this book highly enough. In terms of knitwear it covers everything in a child's wardrobe

The most satisfactory collection of baby/kid patterns ever!

I bought my copy of 'Kids' Knits' in 1983, when it was newly published and I was pregnant with my first child. The photos are gorgeous, the designs are simple, classic and beautiful; and 23 years later, they still hold up against any other collection I've seen. Other than possibly updating some of the yarn colors (to look less "80s"), the patterns themselves will never go out of style. My old copy now resides in a 3-hole-punched binder, as the paperback binding finally wore out, and will be used again whenever the first grandchild makes an appearance.

A DELIGHTFUL BOOK OF CLASSIC CHILDREN'S KNITS

KIDS' KNITS: IRRESISTIBLE HAND KNITS FOR INFANTS AND CHILDREN TO AGE FIVE, by Lesley Anne Price, is a delightful collection of babies' and young children's knits using mostly natural yarns--Shetland wool, cotton, and silk. Published in 1983, this book was ahead of its time. Today the quality and the variety of Price's designs compare favorably with those in the recent books of Debbie Bliss. These knits were originally designed for Price's three children and inspired by her travels in Europe, the Middle East, India, Africa, and Australia, as well as by her British heritage. The designs are charming and varied. Space restrictions allow me to mention some, but not all, of these wonderful knits. In addition to socks, hats, and mittens, the designs include an Aran jacket with hood, cables, and bobbles; a Guernsey sweater (knitted in the round); a smocked, knitted dress that also has a whimsical "pouch" purse containing two little knitted dolls; a ballerina wraparound bolero with leg warmers and headband knit of mohair; a frilly christening set with a Shetland shawl; a boy and a girl's sailor outfit in cotton; and a coat-dress and frilled bonnet with borders of red and pink flowers. There are Fair Isle designs for a dress and a jacket and cap, as well. Simple garter-stitch patterns are included for a hooded bunting, a clown playsuit, a hexagonal baby shawl with sections sewn together and finished with a frilled edge in a contrasting color, as well as ballet slippers, espadrilles, and suede-bottomed pumps for babies. In addition, Price includes patterns for three "Nursery Friends": a boy, a girl, and a baby doll wearing removable knitted clothes. There is also a pattern for the Three Bears and Price's suggestion to make Goldilocks using the girl doll pattern already mentioned. The "Knitting Know-How" section is very helpful, with photos and large color drawings that are easy to view. This section includes information on basic knitting stitches, knitting problems such as dropped stitches and ladders, special techniques such as knitting bobbles and buttonholes, methods of multicolor knitting and knitting in the round. This book would be a valuable addition to a knitter's library, even in this new millennium!
