Over 50,000 young people are confined on any given day for various offenses within the borders of the United States of America. Most are not violent offenders. Many of those same children are warehoused in large facilities where they continue to suffer unsafe conditions including physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, a lack of adequate mental health treatment, and severely outmoded practices such as solitary confinement, all in the name of saving taxpayer money. A society that is unwilling to treat its own children with basic human dignity is a society made up of people on the verge of becoming something less than fully human themselves. A prospect most voters and state legislators fail to consider when they continue to underfund innovative and least restrictive 21st century approaches to delinquent adolescent rehabilitation. Listening to the teenagers involved is a good first step. This book is an opportunity to do just that.
