A nonfiction family odyssey in the killing fields + history

A Cambodian family of ten finds itself in the killing fields and struggling for their collective lives. Intertwined in their story is a history of Cambodia and world events which resulted in the success of the Khmer Rouge. It is the only book which relates life from within the Khmer Rouge organization when the eldest son is pressed into the army to fight the Vietnamese invasion. The book reads like a novel while the reader also reads history. The story covers a time span of six years from the fall of Phnom Phen to an exciting attempt to flee to freedom.
