Product Description

A hurricane swells outside, but it's nothing compared to the storm within the hotel at Key Largo. There, sadistic mobster Johnny Rocco (Edward G. Robinson) holes up -- and holds at gunpoint hotel owner Nora Temple (Lauren Bacall), her invalid father-in-law (Lionel Barrymore) and ex-GI Frank McCloud (Humphrey Bogart). McCloud's the one man capable of standing up against the belligerent Rocco. But the postwar world's realities may have taken all the fight out of him. John Huston co-wrote and compellingly directs this film of Maxwell Anderson's 1939 play with a searing Academy Award -winning* performance by Claire Trevor as Rocco's gold-hearted, boozy moll. In Huston's hands, it becomes a powerful, sweltering classic.

Pass the Tornado please

The black and white movie, the subtle tension as it builds throughout the movie, the scenes where things could go very wrong all work together with the great acting. It is the best of the Bacall-Bogart collaborations and for once Robinson fits the bill as the bad guy more so than in his usual gangster movies. You can feel the humidity of the Florida keys and the storm building through the story as the mob people wait impatiently for their ride out of the area. Bacall is hysterical at times as her father and Bogart navigate the vicious behaviour they are confronted with.

A look at the real Florida Keys

Major Frank McCloud (Humphrey Bogart) visits his war buddy's family in Hotel Largo in Key Largo, Florida. Looks like he puts his foot in it when he finds he is in the middle of a situation that brings him into conflict with the evil doer Johnny Rocco (Edward G. Robinson). Naturally, there is a storm and a woman (Lauren Bacall) involved. Some filming locations are: Overseas Highway, Key Largo, Florida, USA Key West, Florida Keys, Florida, USA Seven Mile Bridge, Florida Keys, Florida, USA It can not be all Florida Keys: The interior of the hotel and bar - Stage 16, Warner Brothers Burbank Studios - 4000 Warner Boulevard, Burbank, California, USA. This "Key Largo"(1948) is the fourth and final film with Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. It is not one of my favorite Humphrey Bogart movies, but it is well executed and should not be overlooked.
