Behind the Art: Kenzie's Christmas Bell

It all began with a photo of Kenzie visiting Santa at a Christmas event for children with Down syndrome. It was a joyful, genuine moment that captured the warmth and wonder of Christmas. Lucille saw in that image the heart of a story and began transforming it into something timeless.

Using Adobe Photoshop, she first prepared the photo by removing the indoor background and placing Kenzie and Santa into a soft, snowy setting filled with light. This became the foundation for the artwork. From there, she recreated the moment in Substance 3D Modeler, sculpting each form as though it were hand shaped from clay. Every contour was gently refined to give a natural, handcrafted look that felt full of life.

In Substance 3D Painter, Lucille added colour and surface texture, painting each detail by hand to create the feel of traditional claymation. Subtle variations in tone and texture make the figures appear as if they were modelled with real clay, carrying the warmth of human touch.

Lighting and composition were completed in Substance 3D Stager, where she recreated the quiet glow of Christmas light across snow, fabric, and skin. Finally, the image was finished in Photoshop, where she adjusted depth, colour, and fine detail to complete the sense of atmosphere and magic.

Though created entirely in 3D, Kenzie's Christmas Bell feels handcrafted and full of warmth. It is a digital claymation world born from one true, joy filled moment between a little girl and Santa.
