Jomo Kenyatta was the first Prime Minister of Kenya and later became the country's first president when the nation gained independence from Britain in 1963. Kenyatta vehemently opposed colonial rule in Africa. This theatrical adaptation is based on his short allegorical story: "The Gentlemen of the Jungle," a symbolic tale portraying the ironies of European colonization. The script offers an artistic way to understand an African perspective to colonization and the realities of colonial intrusion on a people or country. The play can be read and/or performed at the middle school to university level for students of drama, literature or history. It is especially insightful when studying the European partitioning of Africa and the African independence movements of the 1950-1970s.
