Kendall's Freedom At Liberty

Kendall Marks was an extremely handsome African American man with impeccable integrity. He was six feet, two inches tall, and weighed about 185 pounds. He had medium brown hair and golden-brown eyes. Kendall's skin was average-brown but leaning toward the lighter side.Kendall was humble, quiet, and intelligent, but he was also popular, articulate, and competent. He was a better than average athlete and a top student throughout high school and college. After receiving a scholarship from one of the top HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges/Universities) in the country, Kendall graduated at the top of his class and accepted a job teaching at a prestigious private school in a Southern town called Liberty.Throughout his early years, Kendall enjoyed acceptance and popularity because of his beauty, despite the fact that he was worthy of such honors. During high school he dated a few girls, but never became serious with any of them. He also abstained from dating for most of his college years so that he could focus on his studies and grades. Now twenty-one years old and ready to begin a career as a high school teacher, Kendall hoped that his time in Liberty would provide an opportunity to achieve his goals. One of the benefits of accepting a position at the Greater Liberty Academy was that he would receive free tuition for one correspondence course per semester and a full summer term toward his graduate degree.Kendall moved into a comfortable two-bedroom apartment in Liberty and quickly prepared to begin his duties at the academy. One of the first people he met was another African American Teacher by the name of Allyson Peterson. Allyson recently graduated from one of the top colleges in the nation and her family was wealthy. She was also recruited to try and bring more diversity to the faculty at the Greater Liberty Academy, where the student body was well integrated, but the school faculty was nearly all Caucasian. Although neither Kendall nor Allyson experienced any aggressive prejudice or bigotry from anyone in Liberty, they noticed clearly separate neighborhoods divided by race, class, and economic status. Kendall and Allyson lived in the same integrated apartment complex located only a few minutes' drive from the school campus.Allyson was drop-dead-gorgeous. She was five feet, seven inches tall and had beautiful brown eyes and dark brown hair. Her skin was fair to give an appearance of a multicultural heritage, but both of her parents were black. She was outgoing, talkative, and quick-witted.The school's Headmaster was a man named Clinton Stovall, a 35-yearl old white man who genuinely admired both Kendall and Allyson. The first time the two new teachers met was during meeting in Headmaster Stovall's office. Although the headmaster expected the two black teachers to immediately connect, they maintained a deliberately professional tone and demeanor toward one another. The headmaster observed the two teachers leave the building without saying even a few words to one another. He was stunned and disappointed because he purposely recruited both a black female and a black male as a means of maintaining a social balance for each of them. Though not necessarily trying to play matchmaker, he thought the new teachers would demonstrate a visible excitement to see the other on the staff.
