Significant Matters

Fr. Wilson Miscamble, C.S.C, describes this book as "a simple book about some significant matters." The book is just that. Fr. Miscamble is a wonderful homilist, a favorite on the Notre Dame campus where he teaches. That engaging voice, carrying wisdom and inspiration in plain-spoken terms, comes through in this rather concise book. The book is primarily written for Catholic students in college and for recent graduates, but its value really goes to Christians generally, regardless of age and place in life. We can all make use of Fr. Miscamble's counsel on such topics as God's call in our lives, relationships, marriage, work, service and parenthood. We can all, in short, become better by reading this book.

Authentic and helpful

This was a very rewarding read and I greatly appreciated the portability of Fr. Miscamble's written homilies in book form. I was blessed to have had Fr. Miscamble for both of his US Foreign Policy courses, a real boon for a non-History, non-Liberal-Arts major at the University of Notre Dame, and also blessed to have heard him give a few homilies in person, including one at my wedding. I asked him afterward for a copy of that homily, but I am sure that had nothing to do with his capturing these homilies in book form! Fr. Miscamble is an authentic priest committed to his discipleship of Christ, and striving to reach as many young people as possible and inspire them to know and follow Christ. I remember the first time I stopped by his office to request an extension on a paper. He ended that conversation the same as he titled this book "Keep the faith," and he ended many other conversations that way as well. That is his prayer for all, whether they buy this book and read it, or not. The logic in some of the homilies/chapters is intriguing, and hopefully will challenge many to take them as written homilies and then do the intellectual research to delve into the logic that is captured, as well as into the authentic discipleship that is their inspiration. Go ahead buy the book. You will enjoy it and it will help you "keep the faith!"

a student guide to keeping and living your Catholic faith

"[O]ur religion, our faith, does not take us out of life but energizes and gives meaning to everyday life." Thus comes the inspiration for Fr. Miscamble's short essays on the Catholic faith in young adult life. His book touches on nearly every aspect of growing into the "real world" with faith intact. It's divided into 3 sections: Faith and Discipleship, Men and Woman - Love and Friendship, and Mission and Service in the Church and the World (and includes a small appendix of "A Few Things a Catholic Should Know"), and explores subjects and questions relevant to today's youth. Each essay is no more than a few pages, which, coupled with Fr. Miscamble's engaging prose, makes this a fast read. His experience in campus ministry shows through in his ability to write to students rather than down to them.Fr. Miscammble says in the introduction that his book is directed mainly at students attending or just graduating from Catholic colleges; I would add high school students and all young Catholics to the list. This book won't provide you with complex theological answers or untangle every obstacle you encounter. It does, however, provide the extra boost of faith many of us yearn for as we sort through our lives and newfound independence.

Send this book to students you know

Miscamble, a very popular homilist at Notre Dame, presents a series of meaningful essays aimed at intelligent young adults who are looking to make a the world a better place. The book's elegant prose engages an college student yet is easily read -- no essay will take more than 10 minutes. The messages are Christ-centered and practical. Enjoy this book yourself and then send a copy to any student you know who wants to figure out the 'meaning of life.' This is not the definitive answer, but it will help.

Powerful Reflections from an Insightful Man

This collection of essays speaks particularly to the difficult age of those in college and those who have recently graduated from college. The essays are short, but are filled with spiritual guidelines and practical examples which makes the scriptures, which are the backbone of this book, come alive. While in the catholic college community, many of these themes are heard on a regular basis, but Fr. Miscamble has brought them to a wider audience and has allowed his spiritual guidance to travel beyond the sanctity of the chapel. Especially insightful were his essays on love and friendship - Fr. Miscamble's reliance on traditional Catholic value systems provides a visible and reliable framework for his practical application of faith.
