On a state map, Rodeo Idaho would be lucky to be represented by even the smallest dot. In a state best known for its contributions to French fries, the predominantly Japanese-American town sits virtually unchanged since the 1940s, when it was established as an internment camp during World War II. Rampant poverty, failing schools, and a suffocating gang culture regularly seem to choke the town's citizens. The only claim to fame in the community is the beloved high school baseball team, the Rodeo Dragons.Kato Yamato, whose grandparents were relocated to Rodeo during the War, is the star of the Dragons and is ready to escape the town which has consumed into depression so many of those around him. His powerful baseball pedigree is about to pay off in a few years, when he graduates from Rodeo High and goes on to play ball in college. Physically, he is ready to be a star. Unfortunately, his ability to achieve his goals is continually thwarted by his tendency to be his own worst enemy. The apparent poster-child of Rodeo must control his own issues, which include being a coward, drug addict, and on and off again gang banger. In a battle to escape Rodeo and perceptively save himself, Kato must balance his demons in hopes of eventually becoming the man he always wanted to be.
