A Review of Katelyn's Affection by an adult

"Katelyn's Affection", by Kirsten L. Klassen, is a book for teens that deals with the real issues facing kids today, including divorce, relationships, religion, and date abuse. Katelyn is a Mennonite teenager living in northern Indiana with her mom and sister. Her parents are separating, leaving Katelyn and her younger sister to wonder and worry about their very near future. While the girls' parents are busy with their lives as well as making their own adjustments to separating, Katelyn and her sister lean on each other for support and advice. Together they get through their busy lives, including volunteering, dance and the stresses of dating. What I love about this book is that it kept my attention completely, as I too worried about Katelyn's and her sister's future. I felt the struggle Katelyn experienced with dating a different boy (who happens to be of another faith) when the boy she had dated for two years stopped communicating with her when he went away to school. The teens in this book sometimes struggle with their faith, but they also talk it out, and walk it. It is really touching. "Katelyn's Affection" is a terrific book that teens and adults will enjoy because the dialogue is so genuine, the subject matter is relevant and the emotions are real.

Teenage Insights

Katelyn's Affection This is the story of a teenager confronting "coming of age issues" such as a family divorce, date abuse, and conscientious objection to violence in the frame work of a caring family and church community. The involvement of characters in volunteer work provides refreshing insight into facets of young adult development. The novel emphasizes the importance of friendship and communication as teenagers sort out complicated dating and family relationships. This would be an excellent resource for high school age discussion groups.
