(Please also see my review of Mandalay's Child from Sep 2001!) Senior year of high school I was assigned to complete a project on the country of Burma. I found Dr. Sharma's work and read Mandalay's Child to use as part of my literature section of the project. All sections of the project had a common theme - suffering and hope. This 2nd book in the trilogy, a "pre-quel" you would say, reiterates the theme and offers the reader historical perspective of from an earlier date. It is not until a bit into the book that you realize the story is introducing the character of Devi Lal, from Mandalay's Child. Like Mandalay's Child, this book is written in a way that the reader becomes attached to the characters, their families and their personal struggles. It had been quite some time since I thought about Burma and what I learned from my research project. I went back and re-read Mandalay's Child, which was more amazing than the first time I read it. Do pick up these books by Dr. Sharma for a one of a kind experience!
