This is an Norwegian children's story about brothers Karius (caries) and Baktus (bacteria) who live in the mouth and cause cavities. Children and adults all over Norway know this story by heart. Ask any Norwegian child what Karius and Baktus like to eat and they'll tell you, "Loff og karameller!" (sweet breads and candies) It's utterly unforgettable and a great way to teach kids about good dental care.

This book is excellent in making the direct link between eating habits and oral hygiene habits in the formation of cavities for young children. I highly recommend it.
Classic kids book- of two guys inhabiting your teeth

The story is just beautiful. Carius and Bactus are feeding on all the candy and white- bread with cyrup the boy (who owns the teeth) is eating. Carius and Bactus make themselves wonderful homes within the teeth, expanding them every day. The happy days are soon gone, the boy complains, his teeth hirt, and his mother is taking him [to Carius and Bactus horror] to the dentist. The story is ending well for the boy, but you feel kind of sorry for Carius and Bactus that are flushed down the drain. The last graphic image shows Carius and Bactus drifting in the "ocean" (looking for a new prey?).A book containing moral and pedagogics you can share with your child, I was exposed to the book in my childhood and I've read it for my kids. Highly recommended. Thorbjoern Egner has several other books apparantly translated into English. All the books contain songs (lyrics and music is in the appendix). A Norwegian film-maker (Ivo Caprino) made a TV short-story (with dolls) of Carius and Bactus, if you have a chance try to see it.This 5 star review is probably biased, since I'm myself Norwegian and the book is part of my "cultural background". However, the story is universal and fit extremely well with current problems caused by our "western" nutrition.
A Norwegian childhood memory

All Norwegian children are familiar with this book. It's a real classic in Norway. The book is about two men, Karius and Baktus (hence the title), who live in the teeth in the mouth of a boy named Jens. They feed on whatever Jens eats, especially when he eats candy. If he keeps his teeth clean, Karius and Baktus starve. But Jens loves candy, so they have plenty of food. When they're not hungry, the two men make holes in Jens' teeth (the holes are their houses). In Norway, parents read this story to their children in order to teach them to keep their teeth clean. Well, what can I say? It worked for my parents; neither my brother nor I have to this date ever had any holes in our teeth...(I'm 17, my brother's 22.)I like the book because it's a nostalgic part of my childhood. The pictures are very sweet, and the story has a happy ending (sort of, anyway.) I'd definetly recommend it; it has a sense of humour as well.
