Fifth grade math expressed in problems related to sports

If a child is a sports fan, then this is the book you need to motivate them to learn math. The students are given sports questions using many different strategies with the most common being where the answers are coded to numbers. The hints are arithmetic operations where if they are done correctly, will point you to the answer. For example, on page 27 there is a timeline of the stolen base records in major league baseball and the number of steals for the season is expressed as a math problem. The number of stolen bases that Maury Wills had in 1962 is expressed as (16 * 7) - (37-29) and the number that Rickey Henderson had in 1982 is expressed as (130 - 72) + (18 *4). Other types of problems are word searches, substitution coding and fill in the word. The wide variety of problems gives the teacher a great deal of latitude in selecting exercises of a particular type. The only possible drawback is that if a student dislikes sports, receiving a steady diet of these problems may be counterproductive.
