Mike Jacobson was the first National Wildlife Refuge employee to live among the Native People (Inupiat) of the Arctic Coast. He was stationed at Kaktovik to learn how the Inupiat depend on the aquatic and terrestrial wildlife of the Refuge for food and cultural heritage. For three years he kept a journal of his work and the community affairs, including harvest of caribou, whales, polar bears, Dall sheep, and fish.
