While playing hooky one day to go surfing, Kaiona falls off her board on the last big wave of the day and encounters Namaka, the Hawaiian goddess of the sea, and her guardian dog, Moela. Namaka teaches Kaiona about the beauty and dangers of the ocean and presents her with a shell necklace to remind her about their meeting. Upon her return to her family, Kaiona is reprimanded by her sisters and disbelieved when she tries to explain about her meeting with Namaka and Moela. Confined to her home, Kaiona dreams about the ocean until she is visited by Moela who beckons her to follow him to the sea. Upon reaching the shore, Kaiona sees all the signs that Namaka had shared with her about how quickly Mother Nature can change and attempts to warn the villagers about the coming disaster. With the help of her grandfather, Kaiona leads her family, friends, and neighbors to safety, and is rewarded with their gratitude for her wisdom and courage.
