An Intimate Look At Afghanistan

In 1970, when for most travelers Kabul was merely a stopover on the route to Katmandu, I spent the summer there, making trips around Afghanistan by local bus and truck, and talking to everyone. I learned to communicate in a fairly fluent mixture of Farsi and Pashtu. It was the most difficult country I have ever been to, and yet one of the most fascinating experiences of my life. And I kept all the details in this diary.
