Justice for the Swains: How One Journalist Exposed a 35-Year-Old Murder Mystery

by Gerri G. Lyon

In 1985, Harold and Thelma Swain pillars of their South Georgia community were brutally murdered inside their small-town church. The crime shocked the congregation, devastated their family, and left investigators scrambling for answers. For decades, the truth remained buried beneath flawed police work, unreliable witnesses, and a justice system too eager to close the case. An innocent man, Dennis Perry, would spend years behind bars while the real questions went unanswered.

This is the story of how one journalist refused to let the truth die.

Blending investigative depth with human storytelling, Justice for the Swains follows the relentless pursuit of justice that reopened a forgotten case. From lost evidence and DNA breakthroughs to witness recantations and a trial that never should have happened, this book reveals how journalism became the key to unraveling a 35-year-old mystery.

Inside you'll discover:

✔️ The haunting events of that spring night in 1985 that shattered a tight-knit community

✔️ How police missteps and tunnel vision turned suspicion toward the wrong man

✔️ The toll wrongful convictions take on families, faith, and trust in the justice system

✔️ How investigative reporting uncovered inconsistencies, exposed systemic flaws, and forced a re-examination of the case

✔️ What this story teaches us about truth, accountability, and the power of persistence

Part true crime, part social history, and part lesson in the vital role of the press, this book is not only about one murder but about the fight for fairness in America's courts and the communities left scarred by injustice.

Justice delayed is not always justice denied when truth has champions willing to fight for it.
