There are many books on fonts; most of these books take a textbook style of presentation.
This book, however, is more geared toward Simon Garfield’s experiences and thoughts on fonts. To get down and really read the book, you will want to look at the pictures, drawings, and graphs. They alone are worth the book.
Fonts are just tools. But before you can use a tool properly, you need to know your goal and which tool is best to accomplish the purpose. Learning from Simon Garfield can save a lot of experimental time.
I find this book interesting as today a font is just a pixel organization. However, I learned about fonts in typesetting classes.

A really nice book to read. It's not technical but through history will help you understand a bit better topography and give you a glimpse on the subject of perception of typography.
