Night is coming, and it's time for Grandma and Granddaughter to get ready for bed. Look at how alike they are: both have pajamas and fluffy white robes, and striped socks and fuzzy slippers. Each one has her own toothbrush and toothpaste, and pillows and blankets for cozying up and cuddling. Plus, the two love reading their books before shutting their lights and going to sleep. Sweet dreams to both!
Erik Brown , known for his shiny illustrations in "Just Like Mommy" and "Just Like Daddy" has branched into writing with his first book. This book is likely to be well-received by parents preparing their child for the first night away from home. The textured illustrations from previous books continue, featuring mirror images of the child and grandmother, allow a preschool audience to touch the blankets and bathrobes of the young narrator and her grandmother. Although the expressions on the characters remain static (but pleasant) over the course of the book, the audience may be comforted by the routine for bedtime at Grandma's house is very similar to the bedtime routine at home and identify with the activities pictured. After a few readings, children are likely to chime in with the predictable refrain of the title. While parents may question the strict gender roles (a girl with grandma and a boy with grandpa) many grandparents may appreciate that the grandmother is not stereotyped as elderly-and bears a strong resemblance to Mommy, of Just Like Mommy.
