Dad had said that the depression would end and everything would be alright again, but it wasn't. Now, America is at war and Dad has been drafted into the Army, but his letters weren't coming and his pay had stopped. Something is horribly wrong. Danny is worried that they are running out of food and might have to eat the laying hens. There isn't going to be hay for the milk cow and horse this winter. Mom isn't well and might be having twins and his younger sister won't help with anything. He begged God, "Please make them send Dad home. I can't do this. I'm just a skinny kid."
