A Great Vacation Read - Enjoy!

Obsession is the single word that comes to mind after reading Just a Short Walk on the Beach by Neal Tyner. I would have to think long and hard about "taking a short walk" with Mel Fischer, the bad guy and con man featured in Tyner's new action novel. As is the case with many con men, money is Mel's obsession and in each and every way he can think of, he figures out how to ensure that he can take "something off the top" for himself. Obviously, Mel is intelligent and has experience and knowledge in the particular situations in which he will pull his tricks. In Just a Short Walk on the Beach, he pro-poses to build/manage a major resort spot on the isle of St. Maarten. A good con man is always a "great talker," and Mel convinces a group of investors to hand over millions, yet he slides over and under and in between questions and situations so that he is believed and/or ultimately given additional chances to make good. Meet Mel--the bad guy you love to hate! And then, thankfully, there are the good guys--the guys that are involved in making money, but are doing it through not only intelligence but through sound business thinking and knowledge and a basic honesty. In Just a Short Walk, Tyner slots Ed Stiner as a successful investment advisor. The pitch from Mel is to build a resort on the island of St. Maarten with a nude beach hideaway. Mel already has one major investor who has "bought in" because his trophy wife needs to have a secluded place to get her "rays" without having to endure the lines from swimwear. Need I say more? Mel comes next to Ed Stiner who, as partner as well as advisor, has another potential investor, Cliff, who might be willing to make a major investment. Cliff is thrilled to think about heading to St. Maarten on business where he can actually get away from his overbearing wife and his kids, and maybe enjoy the sights on that beach. His obsession has little to do with the money, rather the end result which he can "use" for his own private getaways. When your own personal obsession meets with a con man's obsession, be prepared for mayhem and tragedy! As in obsessive situations, there is never quite enough money skimmed. Mel is one of the best in thinking through how to target others and talk them into a part of the action in skimming funds from the project. Even the governor of the Island is involved! I've seen it myself and this won't be the last story of paybacks and cons occurring on major renovation projects. Just think of the many opportunities you could come up with yourself, including arson, and then realize that people like Mel Fischer have done all that you've thought of and much more! Ed Stiner has a major job in trying to sift through the lies and deceit and money problems that continue throughout the construction activities. Tyner has developed a number of excellent characters as the good guys. In fact, for me, it is the characters that proved to be a high point. Mel's mistress, Bebe, turns away fr
