Every spring, the Plain at the U.S. Military Academy comes alive. If you are lucky, you will be treated to a brigade-size Pass and Review parade with the full Corps of Cadets decked out in their grey over white parade uniforms, emerging from the sallyports of Washington Hall, thirty-six rigid company formations marching on field, with EVERY cadet's left foot hitting the ground simultaneously when the deep drum beat from Academy band sounds. As these company formations draw closer, and you start to see distinctive bodies, the company commander, the guidon bearer, the larger body of cadets massed behind them in a Romanesque army formation- you wonder who are those cadets with the sabers? Why do some have feathers on their parade helmets while others don't? To onlookers and tourists, this is a great spectacle. To the First Classmen, the seniors, those carrying the sabers in these ranks, it represents the oncoming birth in their new careers as regular Army officers come graduation in early summer.
