Ernst Junger's 1934 essay "Uber den Schmerz" is one of Junger's most important texts. It is thematically related to his seminal essay "Der Arbeiter. Herrschaft und Gestalt". A new relationship to pain is interpreted as a criterion of modernity, which, according to Junger, is nihilistic at its core. Modern man must thus be ready to objectify his body in all possible ways to such an extent that pain becomes a measure of this intrinsically senseless process.
