And when it did, they took off their field packs, moved into their dream homes and started families of their own.
The heroes of the war became gentler heroes to their wives, children, and friends. From a child's point of view, it was a wonderful, and simpler, time and place. Building playhouses, setting up tiny swimming pools, having catches, putting on plays and circuses, building snow forts in the back yards.
It was a unique time, Janet Gilmore remembers, and one that may never come again.
