Judith Sears is a good wife, good mother and good human, who is brought to grief by escape from her abusive husband in a brief "only for a while" affair with an executive at her place of employment. In their only tryst, at a Manhattan hotel, the pair is robbed at gunpoint by a hoodlum and Judith is sexually assaulted. Afterward, the hoodlum, known as Dawkins, seeks too extort money for return of the rings he took, under threat otherwise to reveal the assignation to the spouses of each. Thwarted in that, Dawkins invades Judith's home in suburban New Jersey to result he is arrested and Judith suffers public exposure in TV and newspaper reports. She loses her job, is thrown out of the house by her husband, and deprived of her children. The only job she can find with enough money prospects to regain her life is as a waitress in a sleazy "executive club."
