Judge, Recuse Thyself!: LIfe Lessons from Romans Chapters 14, 15 and 16

In these closing chapters of Romans Paul deals with two laws affecting the actions of the Believer. These especially deal with the Christian's relationship to other believers.First, he discusses the law of liberty. In Christ we are free from the requirements and restrictions of the Old Testament Law. For example, the Old Testament Law required abstinence from the eating of certain meats. Paul declares that the follower of Christ is not bound by such restrictions. He follows his discussion of the law of liberty with a discussion of the law of love. A new convert from Judaism to Christianity may still feel tied to the requirements of Old Testament Law. Paul says leave him alone. If God has accepted him why should we not do the same? Give him time. He will grow and mature. As he does he will realize that eating (or not eating) certain foods has nothing to do with his relationship to Christ. In Christ, the goal is to bear (endure) the weaknesses of new Believers. Mature Believers are to help them grow. In doing so they will see the insignificance of the things they once thought supremely necessary.Abstaining from certain foods is nothing. Circumcision is nothing. Only faith in Christ matters. There are areas where Christians can be flexible. But, we will not weaken our stance concerning the virgin birth (incarnation), Jesus' death on the cross, the efficacy of His blood, His resurrection, His ascension and His place at the right hand of the Father where He makes intercession for each of us.However, if one wishes to eat only vegetables, that is fine. We will concede. If one wishes to eat meat that has served as a sacrificial offering, it doesn't matter to us. If one wants to be circumcised, that is fine. We are flexible in some areas. In others we will hold the line. This is what Paul is talking about in these closing chapters of Romans. There are areas where we can ignore the quirks of other Believers. We know they exist because the new Believer has not matured enough to see that they do not matter. We will let him mature. We will help him mature.
