While growing up in Trinidad, Annaise's longing to be a visual artist is influenced by the vibrant river scenes in her village, as well as the iridescent swirling colors she finds in the Jouvert... This description may be from another edition of this product.
Reading this book gave insight to Indo-Caribbean culture. My eyes were closed to the world of racism that exists in the Caribbean. However, after reading this coming of age story about a young Indian girl from Trinidad I was enlightened. Joy Mahabir's characters are alive, colorful, and reminiscent of women in our own families. Getting into the story one can taste, smell, and touch every experience. The details are brilliant even if one has never experienced a Caribbean Carnival or Jouvert. This tale is a reminder to always know who you are and the great legacy you come from.
Great book!
