There is a journey worth mentioning of long forgotten heroes that were brave enough to withstand the odds and take a journey to the West Side! Fighting for the future of their families, struggling, toiling and risking their lives for a catch. They were resilient, innovative, extremely hardworking and lived lives that went against the tide of their circumstances. They are the fisherfolk of the West Side! The story of their lives cannot be forgotten, but is worth mentioning and proclaiming as an invaluable piece of oral history; that needs to echo into the halls of the future generations. Some of them have gone before us and set a platform for what has become a hobby to most- Fishing. However, fishing meant something totally different to them, it was a way of life! It was their identity and it was what built their houses one brick at a time; took their children to school and provided food for their households. They were hard pressed during the time of Apartheid in South Africa and yet even in the face of discrimination, they showed a spirit of determination and faith.
