Myra Nagel has written a thoughtful Lenten resource to help readers grow in their faith as they "journey to the cross". Using the Gospel of Mark, this book invites readers to "Come to the Story", "Reflect on the Story", and "Live the Story". Study questions are provided for individuals and study groups.
Myra Nagel's book 'Journey to the Cross' is a book designed for Lenten study and reflection, intentionally made for adult study groups, but also of use to individual readers. This is a book particularly useful during the lectionary year using the Gospel of Mark, as this is the basis of the text here. Nagel has divided the text into seven weekly sections: 1 - Teacher, Let Me See! 2 - She Has Done What She Could 3 - You Will All Fall Away 4 - Do This, Remembering Me 5 - Not What I Want, but What You Want 6 - Crucify Him! 7 - Their Eyes Were Opened Each section begings with 'Coming to the Story', marking out the biblical passages to be read, and inviting key questions from the readers to place themselves in the story. This is followed by a brief reflection, pulling out themes, images, or other significant ideas. There are then a series of questions, both for reflection and for discussion, inviting readers to participate in 'Living the Story'. Each section then ends with an invitation for a practice to be done during the week. This is sometimes daily prayer, sometimes visualisation, sometimes a more concrete ritual or practice. Nagel gives guidelines for group leaders and group members in the back of the book, things to attend to so that the group meetings are successful. This is ideally done as an 8-week programme with weekly meetings that involve prayer, reflection and conversation. Those using the book alone will want to set aside time that is uninterrupted. Nagel's writing and poetry is interesting and worthwhile, useful for most church settings. As a Lenten study guide, it is a good companion for those who want to deepen their experience with the life, passion and resurrection of Jesus taking place in worship settings during the same times.
