Journey to Freedom

The Freedom Flights and the Freedom Tower
To fully understand this story, it is essential to look at the historical context in which thousands of Cuban families began a new life outside their country.
Following the 1959 Cuban Revolution, many citizens began leaving the island in search of political, economic, and religious freedom. During the early years of the exile, departures from Cuba were irregular and often dangerous.
Between 1965 and 1973, one of the most significant migration programs in modern history was established between Cuba and the United States: the "Freedom Flights."
This program allowed thousands of Cubans to travel legally from Cuba to Miami via humanitarian flights organized with the support of the United States government and religious organizations, particularly Catholic Charities.
It is estimated that more than 260,000 Cubans arrived in the United States through these flights, making it one of the largest refugee airlifts of the twentieth century.
For many of those immigrants, the very first place they arrived was a historic building in downtown Miami known as the Freedom Tower.
Originally built in 1925, the Freedom Tower became a processing center for newly arrived refugees during the exile years. There, families were registered and received initial medical assistance, immigration documents, and guidance to start a new life in the United States.
For exiled Cubans, the Freedom Tower became a powerful symbol. It represented not only the first step toward a new life, but also the hope for a future where freedom was possible.
Today, the building is considered a historic landmark and a permanent reminder of the Cuban exile history.
It is within this historical context that the story narrated in this book begins.
It is a personal story, yet also part of a collective history shared by thousands of families who left their homes behind in hopes of finding a new beginning.
