Sheryl Jansma writes in a free-flowing, descriptive manner that captures the imagination of youth. One vividly pictures the beauty and awe-inspiring aspects of nature throughout the book, while focusing on the characters and their individual struggles and victories in life. In many ways the Grand Canyon is like a Cathedral, and what better location to ponder life and its wonders. Far from being preachy or trite, the author is well-acquainted with science and geology, yet all the while avoiding pedantic arguments but rather framing deeper discussions as an art form. A quick read and very entertaining as well as thought-provoking.
Journey with a Jewel!

This book really fills the bill in it's ability to keep the readers interest as you adventure down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. The two main characters Cadie an avowed atheist and Bren a disillusioned Christian connect in a very special way as the two of them are swept along by the river and their emotions. I particularly enjoyed the weaving in of Canyon history and folklore as well as the arguments for belief in God. This novel is really worth reading for the Christian and non-Christian alike.
Journey Through a Jewel

In her book,Journey Through a Jewel, Sheryl Jansma has combined several themes that are sure to appeal to most adolescents. First, there is adventure. Take a whitewater rafting trip through the Grand Canyon with Cadie, the 17 year old main character. Next, add the innocence and angst of a budding teen romance. Ultimately, the author uses these sub-central plots to reveal the novel's primary theme; scientific vs. theological inquiry. Cadie's "journey," both physically and spiritually, is one that should keep the reader's interest and provoke thought.
