I couldn't put the book down. It's as though the author speaks for all children caught in the throes of war. She was a young child who tried to provide food for her family when there was little food to be found. The reader gets an inside look at what it took to survive in Korea under the Japanese and later during the Korean War. Then the prejudice and barriers she encounters as a bride of a serviceman in Ohio make her more determined to succeed. I agree that her story has the makings of an excellent motion picture.
A must read!

"Journey From The Han River" is the autobiography of a woman who has endured incredible hardship in her native Korea, and ultimately achieved a good life in America. Ok Soon 'Sue' Schroeder was born in a small Korean village. Growing up in Japanese-occupied Korea during World War II, Sue was tricked into a life of slavery before her tenth birthday. Surviving the war and its aftermath, she went from slavery into the traditional servant status of a Korean wife. Then the Korean war broke out and her village changed hands several times during that brutal and brutalizing conflict. She narrowly escaped a gang rape to lead her fellow villagers in carving a cow from a frozen river to stave off dying from hunger. Raising a son while dealing with family issues and endemic poverty, Sue's very life was threatened by the Communists. Falling in love with an American soldier who leaves her, then joining another American soldier who takes her back to his home in Ohio in the 1960s, Sue encountered a life that included politics, love triangles, sadness, and joy. Very highly recommended reading, "Journey From The Han River" is a riveting, candid, superbly narrated account of a remarkable life -- the kind of personal sage of which block-buster movies are made.
