Josephine: A Grandmother for the Ages

Words are powerful. Words can be creative, words can be inspirational, and words can be influential. You can breathe new life into a person who has passed on, recreating a world that revolves entirely around them. You can give them all the treasures that you desired to give them while they were still living. This book is about my great-grandmother Josephine, who passed away several years ago. Unfortunately, as a Black woman who was born in the early 1900s, her grandparents were slaves, so there was very little record of their lives. I had to lean on my imagination. I was blessed to sit with my great-grandmother Josephine many times and I remember her mannerisms. I remember the sound of her voice and how she relayed stories with clarity, certainty, and conviction. In Black or African American culture, we lean heavily on oral storytelling since a lot of our history was not written down. Our oral history came from people's memories. I thought that it would be special to give her the gifts of my words and my imagination. Her memory lives on through her family and those she touched in her lifetime. Although this book is about my great-grandmother, my hope is that you can also envision a loved one who has passed on as well. You will discover that your loved one continues to live on through us in our words and in our memories.
