Hard core fantasy that enchants yet pulls no punches

Joris of the Rock is the kind of book writers are only trying to do today; the protagonist is definitely an anti-hero, even crossing over into true villainy on occasion, but you can't help caring about him and being swept up in his adventures, for good or ill. Barringer created an historically authentic, realistic, 3-dimensional human being with all the complexity of a deep, psychological thriller, yet the writing is in no way heavy-handed; this is a book young readers can enjoy as well as adults (in fact, it might be a good one for thirteen-year-old boys who are starting to think the life of an outlaw sounds romantic...) Barringer also created one of the strongest female protagonists ever to grace the pages of a fantasy i Red Anne...WOW! And Raoul, hero of the first book, GERFALCON, makes an appearance of course, though in disguise. I can understand why this wasn't a big hit back when it was written -- it's WAY too raw, violent, and overtly sexual for Edwardian tastes, I'd think. But it's long overdue for the credit it deserves as one of the finest fantasy books, in one of finest fantasy trilogies, ever written.
