Jonathan's Tales, Volume 3

Author Foreword

Welcome to the third exciting volume of Jonathan's Tales comprising nine magical fairy tales. The stories in Volume 3 admit the same three specific aims as other volumes. Firstly, entertainment; secondly, knowledge transference; and thirdly, a desire for the Tales to be morally instructive. To stimulate a desire to learn more, all the Tales are 'peppered' with rich notations referred to extensively at the book's end. These notations serve a dual function of giving explanation of facts, but also review the meaning of the many idioms/phrases included across the narrative in this book. As such these notations may also serve as a learning tool for international students seeking to better master their English Language competencies. All three volumes might be nominally seen as Middle Grade children's literary work, and yet they admit an eclectic age range. Not only children, but teenagers and adults have reported back on the previous two published volumes their absolute delight. In The Pig and the Cat, a lonely princess loses her beloved magical cat who strays into a wood where a manipulative pig uses the cat as a servant, leaving the cat in a dilemma to escape. The Dog and the Frog follows a young labrador puppy who, due to his foolishness, finds himself in danger. Thankfully, woodland creatures and a teenage boy who can talk to animals come to his rescue. The Watch and the Light tells the story of master watchmakers who connect with a mermaid longing to visit the world above the sea. Set in AD 5095, The Fox and the Computer features Fundee, a clever fox who, bored in his world, strays into an alternate universe and faces unexpected troubles. In The Tarantula and the Carpet, a Prince Tarantula from Egypt travels to England to save a Queen spider from a young boy's harmful antics, teaching him a valuable life lesson. The Lizard and the Phone introduces Dexter, a gaming-savvy lizard whose life transforms temporarily after losing his tail and befriending a wise beaver. The Moonrock and the Cheese follows Reginald Bonkerstopp, an aging entrepreneur with a bizarre belief that the Moon is made of cheese, leading to chaotic consequences. In The Octopus and the Squid, Princess Octopusana is stranded on a beach, prompting her cousin, Prince Squidsnapper, to bravely seek help from unlikely allies. Finally, The Book and the Door centres on Justin, a scholar in love with Princess Grace, whose father faces a tragic fate foretold in a magical book. Yet, through perseverance, Justin becomes a hero, proving that love can overcome adversity.
