In consequence of this conversation, Mr. Holiday found a place for Jonas upon a farm, situated about fifty miles from the place' where Mr. Holiday resided; but he didn't make the arrangement quite so soon as he had expected, so that it was the last part of April before Jonas was ready to go. Rollo asked his father how Jonas was going. "I am afraid that he will Tiave to walk," said his father. "Why not let him ride in your wagon?" asked RoUo. "Then how should we get the wagon back?" replied his father. Rollo did not answer. This was a difficulty which he had not thought of. "I don't know," he said, at length, "unless I go and drive it back." "You might go part of the way," said his father. "I didn't think of that plan. I might let you go as far as you can go in one day, and then you come back the next day, while Jonas goes on." "Well, sir," said Rollo, "but wny can't I go the whole way? We can go fifty miles in a day." "That is rather too far, --to go fifty miles one day, and back the next; but you might go forty miles." This arrangement was made. Jonas put.' his clofhes, his 'books, and papers-and some other items of property, which he had gradually acquired, into a chest, and placed this in the back part of the wagon, on the evening before he was to leave. Then he went with Rollo, to take a walk about the garden, and into the field behind it, and thence down to the brook. He wanted to take a last look at the scenes which he had been familiar witji so long. He stopped upon the bank of the brook, near the fording-place, which he had made, and where he had so often crossed the stream with his cart; and, taking his jackknife out of his pocket, he began to look around among the young trees and bushes, which were growing thick there...
