Much as a "Harry Potter" novel, James Naugle's "Johnny's Jacket" can be enjoyed by both young teenagers and adults with an active imagination. Mr. Naugle brings his experience as a high school wrestling coach, horse breeder and trainer, and avid naturalist together in an action packed book replete with Jennifer, an amazing ten-year old girl, Dot, her fearless Jack Russell Terrier, and Dixie, a magnificent Tennessee Walking Horse. Chased from their ranch by monstrously looking huge men who burn the barn down, Jennifer, Dot, and Dixie manage to escape into the Montana wilderness. But their problems just begin with survival an issue at every turn as they encounter terrible weather, landslides, hungry animals, and, on the other side of a mysterious cave a ghost tribe of Indians, who, having been massacred by the monsters forefathers during Civil War, help Jennifer and her friends to defeat the monsters. It's a great story, well written, that opens up the thought process of Dot, Dixie, and the other animals encountered along the way. As a person who lives with two Airedale terriers and Bengal cat, it's not strange to me at all to have animals "thinking" and using their unique skills to survive. There's a lot of action that can keep your teenager occupied for days. I highly recommend the book and look forward to Mr. Naugle's next.
Heart Pounding novel

Terror in Black and White If you like to sit on the edge of your seat and hold your breath, Johnny's Jacket is the book to read. The author doesn't waste any time. From the first pages, terror starts for twelve year old Jennifer, who escapes from big ruthless dirt bikers whose intentions are to kidnap her. She becomes lost in the forest with her horse and dog, being hunted not only by the armed bikers, but by the wild inhabitants of the forest. From the first day she is fighting for survival in the dark and unfriendly forest. It wasn't until chapter ten that I was able to take a breath when the author pauses to inform us of the family background. It was a short pause as the author takes you back to the exciting action that had my heart pounding again. Part of the suspense is the question of why anyone wants to kidnap Jennifer and kill her parents. What does someone have against the family? The author takes you down a path that you are sure is the answer only to find that it is a dead end. The author weaves such an exciting and frightful story with details that makes you feel that you are there with Jennifer. You feel every painful step, with fear of every danger the forest has for our young victum. You forget that it is fiction and are honestly concerned for Jennifer's life. I highly recommend this novel for young and old.
What a wonderful story.

My 14 yeqar old son, who is usally captivated by only playing sports and video games, surprised me the other day insisting that I should read a book he just finished named Johnny's Jacket. That he would take the time to read a 400 hundred page hard cover was amazing. I figured I better respect his suggestion in hopes of encouraging him more. Surprised again, I found the book so great I wanted to get the word out to other parents that have kids who are not much in the way of readers. The story is action packed and fast moving with wonderful characters and scary bad guys. Discriptions of the Rocky Mountains and the wildlife living there made me feel like I was actually in Montana. The end left me exhausted. That dog in the story totally stole the show. I highly recommend this book to kids and adults who like a good solid suspenseful adventure.

Johnny's Jacket is an excellent book for the 10 and up age group. It has non-stop action, with just enough scariness to keep things exciting. I started reading this book and couldn't put it down until I reached the end. Mr. Naugle does an excellent job of making you care deeply about the characters. His vivid descriptions make you feel like you are living in the story. I would highly recommend this book. Hopefully Mr. Naugle will have more books to follow this one.
