Book Overview

"John and I had a standing joke when we would hear of a book being written about him. I would threaten to write an expos after he died and live off the proceeds in the Bahamas. But one morning on our way home from church he spoke seriously about it for the first time ever. 'When I die, you write the book, Carol, and tell them the way it was.'"So begins Carol Wimber's engaging and, at times, deeply moving account of the life of her husband, John, who died in November 1997. John Wimber is best-known as a great evangelist, a huge influence on the evangelical Church worldwide and a pioneer of the system of church planting. He was the founder of the Association of Vineyard Churches and in the '80s a lecturer at Fuller Theological Seminary, where his course on miracles and church growth was the most popular ever. He was a writer whose books 'Power Evangelism' and 'Power Healing' were bestsellers.Yet John Wimber also described himself as 'just a fat man on my way to heaven' and this book reveals much about the man behind the public persona: generous to a fault, a man who wished only to serve Jesus, the former rock musician with The Righteous Brothers who wrote songs that anyone could play. Carol does not gloss over the darker points of their time together: the near breakup of their marriage in 1961 before they became Christians, and his courageous battle with cancer in the 1990s.Her book is essential reading for all Christians and for anyone who wishes to know more about this spiritual giant of the twentieth century. This edition includes a new foreword, written by Carol Wimber, 22 years on from first writing this book.

Carol Tells It Just The Way It Was

This book provides a clear reminder of so many of the things I learned to value in the Vineyard movement. John and Carol Wimber handled the Bible like a couple of giddy children. They obeyed the word of God, and then with great enthusiasm watched to see what God would do. Their simple faith in the word resulted in plenteous fruit for the kingdom of God. As this book reveals, John was simple, but he was not a simpleton. He counted the cost of discipleship, and he kept his focus on Jesus. Jesus was the example for John for every kind of ministry. Not only does this book tell it like it was, the book, written by John's beautiful wife, has a big heart. Only a heart as big as Carol's could understand a heart as big as John's. I wept, I laughed, and I praised God for such a wonderful life as that of John Wimber. He revealed Jesus to many of us around the world, and for that I am eternally grateful. If you want to know the character and integrity behind the Vineyard movement, this book is a must read.

great book; great man

I loved this book and I loved the man. I sat under his teaching and I loved it. He was such a humble man and he loved music and story telling. I am sorry is is gone.

Carol tells it like it was.

This book really took me back to my days at the Vineyard. I did not attend Anaheim Vineyard, but we did experience many of the things that Anaheim did. I think that this book really gives a good idea of how things functioned in those days. John Wimber is pictured as he was an incredibly gifted man, who made his share of mistakes. He was a man who loved the Lord more than anything. He obeyed God above all else. John spoke many times at my church less than a year before he died. It was great to see him speak to us with such great enthusiasm even though he was in great pain. If I had not read this book I would not have realized that. He was the real deal. I feel honored to have gotten a chance to watch him doing the stuff.
