John Of The Woods

By: Brown, Abbie Farwell

John of the woods unfolds as a children's fantasy novel tracing the journey of Gigi, a young tumbler who escapes from a brutal life under Gypsy masters and finds refuge in a forest filled with kind animals and a gentle hermit. The story begins with Gigi performing in a nomadic traveling troupe, where he endures harsh treatment and constant fear, until a compassionate woman in the audience inspires him to flee. After a narrow escape from both his captors and the dangers of the road, he is briefly sheltered by a kind family before setting off into the woods, where he meets an old hermit who becomes a surrogate father and guide. Under the hermit's care and the company of forest creatures, Gigi's life shifts from oppression to tenderness, safety, and quiet purpose. The novel emphasizes themes of resilience, the healing power of kindness, the contrast between cruelty and compassion, and the idea that true freedom involves not only physical escape but also emotional restoration and a renewed sense of belonging within a chosen, nurturing community.
