Probably one of the last artistic creations from the post-60s/late-70s era, this fine novel brings the reader into a gentle, mellow world (with an occasional splash of blood & sorrow) ... the world as experienced by John Medicinewolf. The book has no plot as such, and needs none. It's simply the narrator relating what his day-to-day, year-to-year life is like in plain, direct prose, clear & refreshing as springwater. He's a storyteller, a bit of a philosopher, going off on interesting tangents as one story suggests & leads into another. And as the book continues, we get the feel for life in the wilderness, just off the edges of modern life, with a warm, loving, strong-minded wife & two small children, an assortment of off-the-map friends, and even the occasional dream visit from a dead grandfather. I'm reminded a bit of Richard Brautigan & the Jack Kerouac who was a Dharma Bum when reading this book, although it's no mere imitation, but an original voice & vision. Well worth searching out, recommended as a memory of a world that's vanishing, and definitely worth reprinting!
