John McElroy Revolutionary War Patriot and Descendants

By Reba A Chunn

After almost six years of fighting the New England States, in 1778, the British decided on a radical new war plan called the "Southern Strategy". Their objective was to isolate the four southern states of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia from their partners in the rebellion. This decision to move the focus of the war to the South put John McElroy and his family in the middle of some of the fiercest and most important battles for our nation's Independence. Things went as planned at first for the British, but over the next 18 months more and more patriots began to flood into the area to oppose them.
