A MAN TO BE REMEMBERED

We miss Henry Faulk, raconteur and storyteller par excellence. Few had his ear for dialects; few could so quickly and deftly defeat the pompous. Now, thanks to able biographer Michael C. Burton, we can spend a little time with John Henry again. In this, the first biography of John Henry Faulk, we trace his life from childhood to scholar, to member of the Merchant Marine to Red Cross worker to radio and television personality. Influenced first by his father and then Texas author J. Frank Doble at the University of Texas, Faulk developed an empathy for the underdog and a firm belief in the idea that if you don't speak out against injustice, you are involved in perpetuating it. A victim of Joseph McCarthy's rout of so-called communist sympathizers, Faulk was blacklisted and unable to find work in his field for six years. Instead of giving in, he took legal action and won a million dollar libel suit. However, Faulk received only a small portion of the amount awarded and was unwanted by producers and network executives. Witty, determined and wise, John Henry Faulk is a man to be remembered.
