Joe's father has recently inherited Fairlight Folly from his Uncle John. Joe, together with parents and his sister Mary and brother Peter, move in and are delighted to find that their new house has a beautiful lake, boat house and an overgrown maze but Joe isn't so sure, he wants to return to their old house. It was small and cosy and not at all creepy, unlike Fairlight Folly. Who is the boy on the landing and why is he there? He starts to feel happier when he meets the twins, Sue and Lucy. They love the house and tell him that they would much rather live in his house, even if there is a ghost. They have seen a girl in the stable yard with a long dress and big hat but she was eating a sandwich which he finds reassuring as he is sure that ghosts don't eat sandwiches. Or do they? As we turn the pages the mystery unravels keeping us on the edge of our seats until all is revealed.
